Carpet rippling, seams showing or wearing out too fast? Find out why.

Carpet problems turn into arguments quickly: the store blames the cleaning, the installer blames the pad, the mill blames the install. I'll find out which is right.

Common failures

What I see, and what it usually means.

01

Wrinkles and ripples.

Most often the carpet wasn't stretched tight enough at install, though the pad and humidity can play a part.

02

Visible or peaking seams.

How the seam was cut, joined and placed.

03

Matting and crushing in walkways.

Can be the product's construction, the pad, or normal use. The report sorts out which.

04

Shading and watermarking.

Patches that look lighter or darker from different angles.

05

Color loss and staining.

Sunlight, cleaning products and spills each leave a different pattern.

06

Backing coming apart (delamination).

Can be a product issue, moisture, or cleaning.

What I check on site

Stretch and installation method, seam construction and placement, the pad, the product's specifications, site conditions, and cleaning and maintenance history.

What the report tells you

Nearly every flooring problem comes back to one of four things: the product, the installation, the site (moisture, the subfloor, the climate inside the house), or how the floor has been cared for. My report says which one, and shows the evidence.

Why an independent inspector

The store's inspector is hired by the store. I'm hired by you, I don't sell flooring, and I don't take jobs that want a particular answer. Fifty years in the trade, licensed contractor for 40 of them, and certified through FCITS, IFCII and NALFA.

"Thank you so much. Very detailed."

How much does an inspection cost?

Packages start at $650 for an on-site inspection, testing and a written report. Mileage from Temecula is added, plus a set add-on for hardwood, tile, stone or areas over 4,000 sq ft. You'll have the full price before anything is booked, and payment confirms the appointment.

Will you need to pull up any flooring?

Not without your permission. Most inspections need no damage at all. If a test would mean removing a piece, I'll explain why and ask first.

The store says it's normal wear. How do I know?

Normal wear has a pattern. So do installation and product problems. An inspection compares what's on your floor with the product's specifications and the industry standards for carpet.
